Abstract: Advanced Knitted Materials
Knitting is the second largest and most popular technique of making fabric by interlacing yarn. Modern knitted fabrics range from thin structures knitted on ultra-fine weft circular knitting machines to very strong, rigid, multi-layer, multi-axial structures produced on warp knitting machines.
Knit to shape is an important feature of knitting technology that enables the formation of shaped fabrics in 2D and 3D, contributing to waste reduction and improved garment fit. With pattern-based 3D design and programming and 3D shaping, the range of knitting applications in the industrial textile sector is bound to expand.
In the first part of the lecture, 3D shaping techniques in electronic flat knitting technology and possible applications for technical fields will be presented.
The second part will discuss digitalization in the knitting industry as a means to achieve sustainability (planet, profit and people) and reduction of inventories, transparency in the supply chain and customization.
